Just a little over a year ago, Gareth Thomas announced that he was gay. He remains a hero to me for his continued support of gay issues. He is a testimony to the fact that gay men come in all shapes, sizes, abilities, thus defying and breaking down stereotypes. Gareth Thomas remains the only openly gay man playing in a high-profile, professional sport. The impact of his decision to come out of the closet while still very much part of his sport should not be easily dismissed. Recently a Tory member of the British Parliament came out of the closet, and he acknowledged the help of Thomas in making his decision. Though you came out in December 2009, the impact of your decision reverberated throughout the world in 2010. Therefore, Gareth Thomas, I choose you as my Man of the Year for 2010. You inspire me. You are a role model to me. Thank you!
